Von der fixen Idee besessen, sich gerne mal selbst in der John Peel Radio Show zu hören, nehmen Andrew William Harvey Taylor und Gary Marx mit minimalem Equipment die erste Single "The Damage Done" auf. Gleichzeitig entscheiden sie sich für den umstrittenen Namen "The Sisters of Mercy" und Andrew gibt sich das Pseudonym Eldritch. Nachdem ein völlig geschockter John Peel die "Damage Done" gleich zwei mal durch den Äther jagte, verkauft sich die erste und einzige Auflage fast komplett. Der Rest ist Geschichte: The Sisters of Mercy haben unzählige Platten herausgebracht, unzählige Konzerte gegeben und unzählige Musiker bzw. Bands inspiriert. Nach über 20 Jahren Musikgeschichte kann hier ohne Bedenken von einer Legende gesprochen werden.
