199 gelesenWer sich eingehend mit obskurer Musik oder obskurer Kunst im allgemeinen beschäftigt, und sich in den Weiten des Webs auf die Suche nach raren bzw. überhaupt nicht mehr verfügbaren Perlen gemacht hat, wird sicher schon das eine oder andere Mal über das Blog des Belgiers Peter "Cranio" gestolpert sein, das sich "The Thing On The Doorstep" nennt.
Seit November 2006 schreibt Peter darin "with the intention of posting out-of print or hard to find experimental, industrial, (post) punk lp's, 12", 7", tapes an cd's from my personal collection."
Dass er damit vielen Menschen wertvolle Tipps gibt, ist wohl eher die Absicht, als der Musikindustrie oder gar den vorgestellten Künstlern zu schaden - vor allem geht es darin um teils längst vergessene bzw. sowieso nicht mehr erhältliche Veröffentlichungen.
Jemanden, der sich so ausführlich und leidenschaftlich um durchwegs nicht-populäre Musik beschäftigt, und dabei im Blogwesen fast schon sowas wie eine Authorität darstellt, muss man ja wohl einmal ein paar Fragen stellen.
Zum Beispiel, wie sein eigener Bezug zur Musik ist, und ob er auch selbst Musik macht:
"I played in a few bands: Hollefiller, Hellfiller, Zero Growth and Zamia, from 1989 to about 1994. They all have ceased to exist except for Hellfiller, who is now a one man project."
Peter, der nahe Ghent in einem kleinen Ort namens Nazareth (sic!) wohnt, ist es aber nicht genug, einfach nur über Musik zu schreiben, er stellt die beschriebenen Alben auch gleich zum Download bereit, was heutzutage zwar technisch sehr einfach ist, aber unter Umständen ja zu Komplikationen führen kann - er hatte dabei aber noch nie Probleme, sagt er:
"No I never had any problems, labels and artists can always mail me if they don't like what I post, and I take the link down, in my opinion it's the decent thing to do, as it's their creation and not mine, with small labels like these you don't get any problems, most of them are very open minded people."
Neben einer mittlerweile unglaublich langen Liste an Veröffentlichungen, die er weitestgehend ausführlich recherchiert hat, findet man bei ihm auch eine ähnlich lange Liste an Musikblogs, die durchzustöbern sich jedenfalls empfiehlt.
Bei der Auswahl der oftmals aus den glorreichen Achtzigern stammenden Industrial/Minimal/Experimental-Alben greift er meistens auf seine eigene Sammlung zurück:
"Many of the albums, ... etc. I post have been collected through out the years. 25 years a go it was a lot easier to find this kind of music than now as you had more specialised record stores, second hand stores than now. Also a lot of releases had mailorders, so it made it a lot easier to get hold of them. In research context would be magazines, fanzines, and the information contained in the albums and the internet of course."
Das Feedback auf sein Blog ist durchwegs positiv, und auch viele Künstler selbst schicken ihm Material:
"The feedback to my blog is quit good, a lot of people and artists mail me with interesting stuff to add in the reviews, so that's very nice, so now the only thing to get rid of is the spammers and idiotic comments of certain people."
Wie schon oben erwähnt, geht die Auswahl nach seinem eigenen Musikgeschmack, und der aktuellen Laune:
"Well that depends somewhat in which mood I'm in or something I haven'd listen to in a very long time, requests, there's no system behind it. And avoiding posting resent and available stuff (if possible)."
Es ist grundsätzlich schon nicht selbstverständlich, sich mit obskurer Musik auseinanderzusetzen, und auch schwer, diese Leidenschaft anderen zu erklären. Warum das bei manchen Menschen so ist, erklärt sich Peter so:
"Hum..., I feel that it's a question I can only answer for myself, as we all will have somewhat different reasons, for me it was the only kind of music that attracted me, lyrics and idea's, doing what you wanted and who cares what other people thought about, and not making music for financial gain as it was with the other general meaningless music you would hear on the radio and television over and over again. On the other hand it was the kind of music that somewhat expressed what I felt, and that I was not alone in my resentment about the current state of living and the brainless people who seem to surround me. After all these years nothing really changed but it's still helps me cope with the stupidity of today."
Die Szene, die sich für die auf seinem Blog beschriebene Kunst interessiert, ist gar nicht so klein, wenn sie sich auch nicht unbedingt als "Follower" deklariert:
"Well I would have no idea, I have about 86 followers, and seem to have about a 1000 people who visit the blog per day, but how many people actual read the blog I dont know."
